Who We Are
LancasterHistory engages and educates the public about the people, places, and events that shaped 300 years of Lancaster County's remarkable history. We are custodians of the materials chronicling our region's heritage. Through preservation, education, and exhibition, we engage audiences in the multi-layered stories of our past.
What We Do
LancasterHistory is a non-profit organization established through the merger of the Lancaster County Historical Society and the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland in May 2009. Today, LancasterHistory includes the LancasterHistory Museum & Research Center (our 230 N. President Avenue headquarters location), President James Buchanan's Wheatland, the Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum, and the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy.
If you are enthusiastic about history, and particularly the history of Lancaster County, this is a great place to volunteer! In addition to our full-time employees, our volunteers are critical to helping us fulfill our purpose. As a volunteer you will work alongside passionate professionals and dedicated fellow volunteers in a state-of-the-art, LEED-certified building or in the home of 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan.
Volunteer Opportunities: A more up-to-date list plus our online volunteer application is available on our website at https://www.lancasterhistory.org/support/volunteer.
