Volunteer: Earn-a-Bike VolunteersThe Common Wheel is in need of folks to support our programming! Specifically, we are looking for people to assist with our Earn-a-Bike classes, which take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm. A little about the program: The Common Wheel’s Earn-A-Bike Program is a 4 week after-school and summer program that is offered 10 times per year to local youth ages 11 - 21 8 students meet at our co-op in Reservoir Park Tuesday and Thursday for 2 hours At the beginning of the program, students select a donated bicycle which are in various states of disrepair Each class covers a separate system of the bike focusing on STEM concepts We spend the beginning of each class explaining how these systems work, how to diagnose and fix any issues, and then we help them rebuild the system with their own two hands At the end of the program, they end up with a completely overhauled working bike that they take home with safety equipment and accessories We also teach them how to ride safely on the street for two class sessions Students come from diverse backgrounds and a large percentage of our students receive a scholarshipAs a volunteer, you would assist our class instructor in following class curriculum to provide assistance to students, participate in group rides, and help address any student needs. All programming volunteers with The Common Wheel are required to complete clearance documentation before working with our Earn-a-Bike classes. Volunteer Requirements: For volunteers hoping to help with any program where kids are present, there are a few additional things we need from you. A little about the program: The Common Wheel’s Youth Bike Workshop is for primary and secondary aged youth to receive basic repairs and components to make their bicycles safer on the streets. Each Wednesday, from 12-6, The Common Wheel provides basic repairs services and reduced cost parts to youth participants, guiding them through the repairs. One of the organization's most popular programs, YBW serves the needs of hundreds of students through the year.As a volunteer, you would assist The Common Wheel's staff in running the workshop and providing assistance to each and every one of the kids that come in for bicycle service needs. Our staff would be happy to provide training and education on bicycle repair and maintenance to volunteers. All programming volunteers with The Common Wheel are required to complete clearance documentation before joining our Youth Bike Workshop.
