Who We Are

""Our vision is a community where having a friend is valued as a core human need for all people." Our mission is to improve the quality of life for people recovering from mental illness through the power and gift of friendship. Compeer matches caring adult volunteers in one-to-one friendships with adults in mental health recovery. Compeer Lancaster is based on the concept that friendship is a primary and basic need of all human beings. Many persons living with a diagnosis of mental illness experience loneliness and isolation from their community. Compeer friendship matches enjoy doing things that all typical friends do, such as hiking in local parks, window shopping, going to coffee shops and restaurants, visiting museums, libraries and farmer's markets, going to movies, and playing table games. In preparation for a Compeer friendship, volunteers attend a three hour training session. The friendship matches are expected to spend four hours a month together for one year. Volunteers receive ongoing support from the Compeer Lancaster staff.
