Who We Are

Mission Statement. The Hempfield Area Meals on Wheels volunteer organization packages and delivers wholesome, hot meals at cost to qualified recipients in the Hempfield Township area. These ready to eat meals, prepared under the supervision of a trained nutritionist(dietitian) at the Mennonite Home, are delivered to those unable because of physical, mental, emotional disability, or lack of skill to prepare meals for themselves, and who have no one in the home able to prepare meals for them. Service may be long or short term and not dependent on racial, creedal, gender, or national origin restrictions. Our volunteer organization operates from the Mennonite Home, 1520 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601 but is not part of the home. All volunteers must furnish their own transportation to and from the home and agree to pay all transportation costs from their own pocket. At the home during the 5 day week (no weekend deliveries), volunteers who are signed up for packaging cold bag lunch ingredients do so in the morning hours, while drivers and visitors assemble there at 11 am to finish packaging hot lunch ingredients and thence distribute said lunches to clients on any one of 5 current routes. Volunteers determine how many hours they wish to contribute per week and/or month and indicate to appropriate committees whether they wish to be on active and/or standby(substitute)assignment. Some work only two times per month, others much more.

What We Do

The Hempfield Area Meals on Wheels program was established in May 1976 and has been operating continuously since then. That translates to more than 32 years of volunteer service to clients in Hempfield Township.
