Who We Are
Homefields is an award-winning nonprofit organization dedicated to creating new life options for people who have disabilities. A modern ranch and 1800s farmhouse are the homes, and a 19-acre farm is the stage. Hundreds of people who have a disability or other barrier to traditional employment have engaged at our Care Farm, growing organic produce for community shareholders.
Residential Mission: To create financially secure, long-term homes for adults with special needs in safe, family-like settings where there is respect for the individual in a holistic sense, and fun and creativity are revered, as basic human needs.
Vocational: To provide horticultural facilities for individuals who prosper with supported employment, to nurture integration through community interaction, and to cultivate a spirit of volunteerism within our community. Our volunteer Board of Directors has responsibilities as the benevolent landowner which includes fund raising activities to support two residences and an organic farm.
What We Do
In 1992 a group of parents and professionals came together to discuss the state of affairs for their adult children with special needs. In 1994 five families incorporated and pooled their finances and purchased an eight-acre farm in Millersville, PA. In 1995, six adults moved into the two homes on the property. In 2000, Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Pennsylvania joined Homefields to provide a community supported agricultural program(CSA). Trainee farmers supervised by a farm manager make it possible for the community to purchase shares of the crops.
Homefields began life as an all-volunteer organization and volunteers are the core of what we are today. There are one-time and ongoing opportunities for individuals and groups; at the Care Farm, our Fall golf and dining events, committees, and more. Some volunteers build our community, others reshape the land or renew the homes. All leave a mark.
