Who We Are

The Rock Ford Foundation exists to maintain and further develop Rock Ford Plantation, its grounds and outbuildings, and to promote knowledge of Gen. Edward Hand's life and times for the cultural and educational benefit of the public. Rock Ford Plantation is the preserved home of Revolutionary War General Edward Hand, who had the house built in 1794. Each year from April through October, volunteer guides in 18th-century costume conduct tours of the historical house, which is furnished with antiques. The site attracts visitors to Lancaster County, as well as local schoolchildren and residents interested in learning more about life in the late 1700s. Special events are also held periodically, including Yuletide at Rock Ford, when the mansion is decorated for holiday tours during the weekend after Thanksgiving.

What We Do

The family of Edward and Katharine Hand occupied Rock Ford from 1794 until 1810. It was then used as a tenant farm until the early 20th century. In the 1950s, it was almost demolished, until the Junior League of Lancaster purchased the property and began the preservation and restoration process. The Rock Ford Foundation was created as a private, non-profit organization to preserve and operate the property as a historical site. The Foundation relies on volunteers to share this valuable piece of local history with our guests.
